Five Last Minute Halloween Ideas for Spooky Kids Decor

Black Cat Halloween Silouette Halloween Decorating Idea

Black Cat Halloween Silhouette Halloween Decorating Idea

Looking to put the finishing touches on your home decorating before the big party?  Or, trying to keep the kids entertained before 5 pm trick-or-treating?  Here are a few quick decorating ideas perfect for you to do with the help of the kids.

Decorative Halloween SilhouettesDownload free stencil patternsand use them to trace colored construction paper to create easy window or wall decor.  This is a great project for little kids to help with.  Consider getting some contact paper to create your own wall decals or wall stickers.  The silhouettes featured above are from Martha Stewart crafts.

Painted Pumpkins - Whip out the washable paints and borrow an Easter Egg tradition.  Consider decorating with just black paint to keep the contrast high.  For a little more pizazz, consider glow-in-the-dark glitter for your pumpkins for a spooky nighttime effect.  Glow in the dark glitter can be found in most major craft stores.

Creative Costume Recycling - Dress unused costumes with old newspaper stuffed in plastic bags.  Sit your homemade critters in chairs on the front porch to greet your trick-or-treaters this evening.

Halloween Door Decor - Create Halloween garland with black, white, and orange construction paper.  Simply cut 8.5″ x 11″ inch paper into 1 inch thick strips and glue or tape interlocking rings together.  Hang them from the top of the front door (on the outside) to add Halloween aura for your trick-or-treaters.

Spooky Tunes- Although more of an aura creator than a decorative idea but achieving the same result (i.e. an excitingly spooky Halloween home), go to itunes for some hip Halloween hits including.  There are a few play lists already created (The Basics, Next Steps, and Deep Cuts) that include favorites like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Bobby Pickett’s Monster Mash.

Happy spooky kids decorating and be safe this Halloween!

Portland, Oregon based POSH Baby is a lovely lifestyle boutique offering modern, eco-friendly, and stylish products for our children and home with a truly inspiring selection of merchandise.  Browse baby and children’s clothing, toys, furniture, wall decor and other lovelies for one-of-a-kind baby room ideas.  POSH Baby carries the popular children’s brands we love (Dwell, Boodalee, Bananafish, and Oeuf) as well as lesser known, but equally stylish products.  Posh Baby prides itself on evaluating products based on great design, great style, and just plain fun – fun for parents, that is :) .

For example, they carry unique kids bedding by Austrian designer David Fussenegger such as this pink striped twin sized pocket blanket with cute little pockets for stuffed animals or pajamas.

They have the largest selection of Danish-made Flensted mobiles we have seen – elephants, fish, rainbows, sheep, and more.  Flensted mobiles are designed and made on Funen, the island in Denmark where Hans Christian Andersen was born.  What a fairy tale!

And, they have a delightful category called “Fun Decor” with ah-ha products such as over-the-door monkey hangings by Present Time, clothes’ trees to hang your wee one’s clothes, decorative organizers, and clips.

Posh Baby seeks organic, sustainably produced and eco-friendly products whenever possible so we can feel even better about collecting these lovelies for our home.

Ode to a Butterfly. The Search for Unique Butterfly Decor Complete.

Choosing decor for a baby girl is not as easy as it may seem.
Especially when you desire to design a unique kids’ room theme.

There are bumblebees and dragonflies and baby birds that tweet.
Flower themes or polka dots or ladybugs so sweet.

A nature theme could make sense – decorate with clouds, sun, and sky.
But for our baby girl, the choice is clear – we choose the butterfly.

The End :)

Butterfly decor is a popular choice in girl’s room decorating which leaves the biggest challenge as finding unique decorative items to make the theme your own.

Bugs-n-Blooms has a creative solution. They design and create nylon decorative butterflies with soft bendable, wire frames and embellish with multi-layered nylon fabrics, sparkling sequins, color matched glitter, and a crystal beaded butterfly body with color matched antennas.  The butterflies come in great kids’ colors such as pink, featured above, purple, lavender, yellow, green, blue, and white.

And, there are so many creative ways to display these beauties!  Create a collage of wall decor as seen in the lavender, butterfly themed nursery above and accent with flowers, ladybugs and other butterfly wall decals or wall hangings.  Hang them from the ceiling and create a soothing rain forest feel.  If your little girl has a  canopy bed, attach them to fishing line and wrap them around the poles of the canopy to help her doze off to dreamland.

For those less interested in a craft project, Bugs-n-Blooms has easier decor solutions that are just as cute such as butterfly wall letters, message boards, and butterfly wall stickers.

The Alma Crib – a Stylish Solution for a Modern Pack N' Play

The Alma Crib - a modern and stylish solution for small spaces

The Alma Crib - a modern and stylish solution for small spaces

The Pack n’ Play is handy. And, it’s convenient. And, it’s pretty durable.  But, it’s just not all that cute.  Lucky for us, there is a new trend towards more modern-looking, portable cribs that are easier on the eye.

The Alma Crib – a high style, fold-up crib – is a perfect example of this.  It is cute AND functional – too often those words are in conflict with one another when it comes to home decor.  The Alma Crib was designed with the urban decorator in mind.  It is perfect if you have a small living space, are looking for a second crib at grandma’s house, or if you have a minimalist design aesthetic in mind for your nursery. The Alma crib can serve all of these purposes.

The modern crib has two mattress height settings.  A bassinet setting for a newborn and a lower height setting to be used for a child up to a two years old.  And, the colors are just marvelous!  They have white, grey, and brown cappuccino for a gender neutral feel.  And, they have a punchy lime green and orange for the more bold.

The Alma Crib is by Bloom Baby. Bloom Baby was founded by four dads who wanted to bring meaningful innovation and contemporary design to  baby products.  These dads also have heart for the environment.  Bloom Baby crafts their alma crib from solid birch wood from certified sustainable wood forests. The wood is independently tested to be free of wood PCP and other toxic wood preservatives.

Sold at retailers across the US, you can find it online at Baby Bliss for $400.  Pricier than a Pack n’ Play.  But, that much cuter.

Delicious Shades of No VOC Wall Paint from PB Kids

No VOC Lily Lavender Wall Paint from PBKids

No VOC Lily Lavender Wall Paint from PBKids

Wall paint is such an easy and low cost way to bring life to your nursery or kid’s room. But, it can be challenging to find that ‘just right’ color and eco-friendly solution (read: no VOC, low odor) you feel comfortable putting on your baby’s walls.

Pottery Barn Kids has been working with Benjamin Moore for a few years now helping you with wall paint ideas to match your kid’s decor.  They have just introduced their latest fall/winter colors in a beautiful selection we adore in Benjamin Moore’s eco-friendly Natura® formula. This zero-VOC and nearly odorless wall paint is great for kid-friendly spaces not only because it is enviornmentally friendly, but also because it covers well and withstands repeated scrubbings from little sticky fingers.

The colors are lavishly named using delicious words such as Raspberry Truffle, Pink Cadillac, Cedar Green, and Blue Marguerite.  Above we show the Lily Lavender shade in a girl’s room.  Their wall paint is available in an Eggshell or a Semi-gloss finish.  The Eggshell finish provides a softly polished look and an easy to clean surface ideal for children’s walls. The Semi-gloss finish stands up well to repeated cleanings, and is recommended for moldings and trim.

These paints are only available online and we highly encourage you to sample the colors before committing.  Because the shades are custom mixed, they are not returnable.  Pottery Barn Kids sells their wall paint in one gallon cans but offers an eight-ounce color sample kit for testing your walls.  They also sell their fan deck for $2 so you can see all the colors.

See our other articles for low or no VOC wall paint recommendations for your kid’s rooms.
