The Five Most Popular Nursery Decorating Ideas & Trends this Year

12.30.09-ornaments-nye

As we come to the end of 2009, we can’t help but reflect on the year and the fun we’ve had finding the freshest ideas in nursery decor.  We appreciate you following us along that journey and would like to share with you the five most popular nursery decorating ideas and trends we saw this year.

5) Elephants – Elephants were huge in 2009.  We featured elephant wall decals from Giggle, elephant throw pillows from bohemian nursery designer Rikshaw Designs, and elephant themed nurseries from designers like Carter’s and Dwell.  Elephants were popular as stand alone decor or as part of a jungle or safari themed room.  We think their popularity will continue in 2010 as they are practically a classic now when it comes to baby or kids room decorating.

4) Tree Wall Decals - Our tree wall decal articles were some of our most read articles of the year.  This tree wall decal by ModBaby on Rate My Space popped on this gorgeous Tiffany-colored paint.  It generated many oohs and ahs as did this modern tree wall decal with bluebirds, this tree wall decal-like design from Pottery Barn Kids, and this cherry blossom tree wall decal.  Given the trend towards organics and long-term environmental sustainability, we think trees will continue to permeate nursery decor.

3) Lavender - Lavender was the new pink in girl’s room decorating this year and this was reflected across the board in paint, bedding, wall decor, and nursery accessories.  Cookie magazine named this lavender painted nursery one of its top of the year. This lavender bedding set and wall decor from Cuddle Kids Bedding Boutique was applauded for its creativity. And, we saw lavender in kid’s wallpaper, butterfly wall accents, and wall paint.

2) Damask – Damask was a nice addition in 2009.  Damask has made a comeback in home decor in recent years and it has spilled over into kid’s room decorating, Reserved for girl’s decor, damask prints for girls’ rooms come from great designers in gorgeous color combinations like black and white damask,  chocolate, sage and white damask, and pretty pink and white damask

1) Owls - Perhaps the most surprising nursery decor trend in 2009 was owl themed nursery decor.  Owls never struck as a particularly cute animal with which to decorate.  But, textile designers, artists, and stylists have proved us wrong giving owls the friendly face we love in children’s room decor.  We primarily saw the trend in owl wall decor such as cute personalized owl wall art from Name Your Design and owl wall stickers from etsy designer Leen the Graphics Queen.  There were also owl themed kids rooms and many nature themed rooms that used owls.

We were seeking stylish and beautiful pendant lighting for the nursery and it is not surprising that we were told to check out Petit Tresor.  You may remember when we wrote about one of their gorgeous, modern gender neutral nursery sets a few months ago. Petit Tresor is a Los Angeles based modern baby boutique catering to the rich and famous and those of us who love decadent baby items.

They have an amazing selection of pendant lamps that can bring your nursery from “cute” to “wow”.  Pendant lighting in the nursery is a modern take on the traditional nursery chandelier or table lamp.  It is usually made out of fabrics or plastics in fun, modern designs and shapes.  The ones we’ve selected above are all made of fabrics, some of which leverage top baby brands you already know.

The Ava scalloped pendant lamp is hot pink on a turquoise background and coordinates with Maddie Boo’s Ava crib bedding shown above.  It has cute bird and floral designs that would be great for decorating a little girl’s room or a baby girl nursery.

The pink Belinda pendant lamp is luxurious in color and style.  This pendant light a soft shade of modern pale pink adorned with crystal, glass, and solid brass fixtures.  Use this light to finish off your princess themed girl’s room.

The blue pinstripe double pendant is a modern take on a classic style.  Petit Tresor worked with popular baby brand Caden Lane to create this double pendant of Caden Lane fabrics to coordinate with their nursery decor sets and styles.  Decorate your boy’s room in style with this multi-blue colored hanging light.

Finally, Petit Tresor’s classic-styled Taley double pendant is made of matelasse with a simple light green trim.  This light would be perfect for a gender neutral themed nursery.

Prices range from $268-$298 for each of these decadent beauties.

The Best Shades of Blue Wall Paint for the Nursery

Light Blue Paint for a Nursery - Benjamin Moore "Lake Placid"

There are thousands of shades of blue paint to choose from which makes it more than challenging to narrow down choices.  We spent some time finding the best shades of blue wall paint for your baby’s nursery or kid’s room so you don’t have to.  Our criteria was based on richness of color, uniqueness of color, and the likelihood of the paint matching other decorative elements like bedding and window treatments.  We then tried to find examples where these paints were used so you had a better sense for them.

And, don’t think blue paint is just for boy nurseries.  Bring in a bit more girl with white, pink, or lavender and you’ll be all set.

We’ve broken our finds into three categories – light blue, medium blue, and dark or navy blue and linked to them where we could find them.  Pretty much all of these are low or no VOC (i.e. no fumes, no odor, and more environmentally safe) but it’s best to confirm before purchase.

Good luck with your painting and let us know how you like our recommendations.

If your house is like ours, the day after Christmas consists of dressing up in Tinkerbell costumes, Princess and the Frog makeup sessions at the new vanity set, watching the Mulan DVD, and various other Disney princess activities.

So, why not bring on the rest of the party and decorate the house with princess wall stickers? It can be challenging to find princess wall decals or wall stickers without too much cheese but this princess, castle, and horse wall sticker set could be cute in a playroom or a princess themed kid’s room.  The set comes in a pink, white, and light green color palette with cute heart themed trees.

From Art.com, these princess wall stickers are removable (phew!) and won’t damage your walls.  And, if they keep the after-Christmas entertaining activities going that much longer, we are all for them.

Top Nursery Wall Paint Color Ideas for 2010

Benjamin Moore's Robins Egg Wall Paint for a Baby Nursery

Benjamin Moore's Robin's Nest Wall Paint for a Baby Nursery

Since we are getting ready to kick off the new year, we have come up with our picks for our favorite nursery wall paint colors for 2010 for a baby nursery.  These wall paint ideas were gathered based on recent home decor trends, our love for certain shades, and an eye on fashion and interior design trends for 2010.  Furthermore, we’ll show you which of our wall decals match with these great shades.

1) Turquoise was recently named Pantone’s color of the year for 2010 and it is a fun color to use in kid’s and baby room decorating.  Take this nursery decorated by Etsy seller and blogger Caroline Armelle above as an example.  She used Benjamin Moore’s Robin’s Nest wall paint to create a modern nursery with a touch of vintage.  This shade is like that beautiful Tiffany blue.  Because the blue is so striking on its own, neutral shades like brown and white add great depth of color. Try our animal wall decals in chocolate brown to add that bit of fun.

2) Caroline’s nursery uses another one of our recommended colors – a sunny yellow.  We like Sherwin William’s Lemon Twist to get that bright and cheery yellow as shown in this Project Nursery post.  Yellow is a wonderful color for 2010 because it can be accompanied with bright and vibrant colors like blues and greens.  Or, it can be softened with soft browns and creams.  This shade of yellow is also great for a gender neutral nursery. We like pairing this yellow with green to bring in that natural feel. Our apple green wall decals are a bright and cheery green that will go with most any shade of yellow. For theme ideas, try our turtle wall decals or our green and yellow butterfly wall decals.

3) Eco-friendly decor will continue to grow in 2010 and our list would be incomplete without that perfect shade of green.  This beautiful Cedar Green is from Benjamin Moore and is part of Pottery Barn Kid’s decor line.  This green is not too yellow and not too olive.  It is that perfect nature-colored green and the paint itself is nature friendly as it is zero VOC. Because it is such a neutral shade, you can use many accent colors to liven it up such as blue, yellow, and orange.

4) Pastel baby blues are a thing of the past and 2010 is no different.  There are so many gorgeous shades of blue to help you create the perfect boy’s room.  Benjamin Moore’s Lake Placid is a timeless classic blue with a bit of grey to bring that contemporary look we seek. Our charcoal grey wall decal letters would add that personalized, matching touch.

5) For girls’ room decorating, there will always be pink.  But, pink in 2010 borders on lilac like this Juice from Serena & Lily. This vivacious color is also low VOC and would work well against white moldings and borders. Again, our wall decal letters in white would match perfectly and we’d recommend a fun type face like curly or wavy.

6) Finally, we think lavender will continue to shine in 2010 as it did in 2009.  This Lily Lavender wall paint is also part of Pottery Barn Kid’s Benjamin Moore selection.  Lavender is a beautiful light purple that provides a nice alternative to a pink wall paint.
