Add a Touch of Whimsy – Hand Painted Furniture & Accessories for Kids' Rooms

Hand painted, personalized furniture and décorative accessories are great ways to add whimsy and personality to your kid’s room.  We happened upon Bret’s Wishes who we think has the right mix of playfulness and style to help bring that touch of fun you may be seeking.  Based in Farmington Hills, MI, Bret’s Wishes specializes in hand painted children’s furniture and accessories and has been in business for more than 20 years.  All their items are hand-painted using child-safe acrylic paints and top coated for greater protection.

A few of our favorites are this gorgeous white girl’s jewelry box with light pink and white flowers and green detailing.  What a perfect little accent for a toddler girl’s room with floral décor or a nature themed room.  Eye-catching it is!

We think this personalized wooden rocking horse would look darling in the corner of a blue baby boy’s room. Use it to add an element of traditionalism to your modern nursery.  Decorated with blue and yellow stars and moons, this wooden rocking horse will be sure to help your little boy drift off to dreamland.

And, we like the color combination of this heart toy box with fun, modern turquoise mixed with traditionally “girl” purple and pink heart, polka dot décor.

We appreciate the detail woven into the design, particularly how they use paint to add texture to the furniture.  The texture adds extra visual appeal and is tastefully done in soft colors.

Bret’s Wishes also does hand painted step stools, wall letters, bookends, coat racks, wall decor, growth charts, rocking chairs, and more.

We love stylish, modern design in the nursery.  And, what better place to start your modern nursery decorating project than with a modern crib?  We agonized over picking the five best modern cribs because there are so many great options out there.  And, we cheated a bit and created a runners-up category for a few favorites we just couldn’t leave out.

1) The Stokke Sleepi crib – We love this modern round crib not only for its dare-to-be-different shape, but for its convertibility and portability.  The Stokke Sleepi crib converts from crib to toddler bed and its size and shape makes it easy to move the crib through small doorways and around tightcorners.  The crib is made with environmentally-friendly beechwood for the eco-friendly mom.  The clean design works with contemporary and traditional décor and the round shape softens the hard edges you often see in modern design – perfect for a soft, cozy baby nursery. $1000 at Land of Nod (get a $100 AmEx gift card if you purchase by 2/28/10).

2) Solare Crib by Q Collection Junior – We love the arch on either end of this modern crib which serves two purposes.  First, it creates the illusion of a classic crib canopy and second, it holds a mobile for entertaining your wee one.  There is enough room underneath for storage and it is made of locally-sourced solid ash and bent wood construction. Toddler bed conversion kit is sold separately. $1220 at Fawn & Forest.

3) Nursery Works Studio Crib – Clean, simple, and modern is what you expect from Nursery Works.  How they manage to make a piece of nursery furniture that functions as a crib, changing table, storage drawer, and storage cabinet that can convert into a toddler bed and fold-out desk AND doesn’t look like an eye-sore is the brilliance in their design.  Toddler bed conversion kit is sold separately.  $1780 on Amazon.

4) Muu Kids Modern Crib- We love the shape and style of this modern crib from Muu as well as the option to decorate it with colorful, interchangeable panels.  Made of solid maple, poplar and wood fiber, the modern crib above has a soft green and brown decorative leafpanel – great for a nature themed nursery.  You can choose from blue whales, pink flowers, or blue helicopters. The crib is available in either a natural or walnut base finish (shown here) and you can buy a conversion kit to convert it to a toddler bed.  $1175 at Petit Tresor.

5) Baby Mod, Roxanne 3-1 Convertible Modern Crib – If the brilliance in Nursery Works is smart, modern design, the brilliance of WalMart  is smart, modern pricing with pretty good modern design to boot.  Walmart’s Baby Mod Roxanne crib is made of New Zealand pine wood construction and comes with a drawer and two storage compartments.  It’s also convertible to a toddler bed (kit sold separately).  For modern design and modern price, you can’t beat this. $199 at Walmart.

And our runners-up…

Sorelle City Lights Commuter Crib – Because it is so eco-friendly and nicely priced.  $406 at Babyearth.
Oeuf Crib – Because it’s Oeuf.  $890 at Rosenberry Rooms.
Spot on Echo Crib – Because of the “wow” affect.  Gorgeous design.  Gorgeous price. $595 at Design Public.

Once you have selected the right crib for you, be sure to see the best modern, nursery wall decals to make sure the crib doesn’t get spoiled from all the attention :)

If you are like many of us, you appreciate art.  But it’s hard to know where to start, especially if you’re trying to find art for your kid’s room walls. You are not alone in this world.  The founders of French-based L’Affiche Moderne had the same problem and can help you find original kids wall art that that does not feel like it “belongs in your dentist’s waiting room”.  Even better, they can help you (and your wee one) with your French.

L’Affiche Moderne is French for “The Modern Poster”. The founders were inspired when they found many great books illustrated by talented artists, but were surprised when they couldn’t find comparably illustrated wall art for their kids.  Hence, L’Affiche Moderne was born with the vision of offering original and creative works by some of the best illustrators, graphic designers and photographers around the world at below art gallery prices.

Their wall art selection has a vintage or retro bent, but an overall modern feel.  Their contemporary art selection for kids has both vibrant colors and neutral palettes as well as vintage-feeling illustrations that remind us of when we were kid’s ourselves. The concepts are sometimes very modern, sometimes funny, sometimes educational, and always beautiful.

Examples above include a gorgeous around the world wall poster for a travel-themed kid’s room.  Penguins in Antarctica, elephants in India, pandas in China, and kangaroo in Australia are depicted in the vintage-styled work by children’s book illustrator Julie Mercier.

This exclusive under-the-sea wall wall print illustration by French character illustrator Marion Billet features fish, turtle, sharks, and other sea creatures in a brightly-colored ocean world.

If you are seeking something delightfully different, consider wall photography to add a unique feel. This photo of a doll in a garden by French photographer Cyril Auvity is precious fora little girl’s room.

Finally, our favorite is this French language wall poster from French graphic designer and illustrator Limoon designed to educate your child on common French words like “arebre” for tree, “un” for one, and “glace” for ice cream.

You can purchase most of these and other wall art from L’Affiche Moderne in poster, mounted canvas, or framed print format and they ship to the US.  Keep in mind that all pieces are limited edition (300 prints in total) so they may not last.  As further incentive, L’Affiche Moderne is offering 25% off to weeDECOR readers now through February 7th.  Just enter coupon code weedecor at checkout.

Making reading enjoyable for our kids is one of THE best things we can do as parents.  So, it is best to encourage interest as early as possible.  And, what could be more fun than creating delight between the bookends?

Not only can bookends be a stylish way to put the finishing touches on your playroom, baby nursery, or big kid’s room, but they can also be a way to inspire your child with what is between them.

In the nursery years, decorative bookends can delight with fun themes like the ones featured above from Peanut Gallery Gifts.  For animal lovers, these cute modern giraffe and ladybug bookends can capture the attention of a baby boy or baby girl, respectively.  For older kids, the space themed bookends for a toddler boy can get him dreaming about spaceships, stars, & moons. These irresistable ballerina bookends for a toddler girl can inspire a girl to dance her heart out.

During the nursery years, use decorative printed paper or tissue paper in engaging colors to cover books or decorative boxes. What is between the bookends can serve the dual purpose of matching the color palette of your room as well as attracting your baby’s attention with intriguing colors and patterns.  Build a towering pile of colored wooden alphabet blocks between the bookends on the wall that spell your baby’s name and point them out to her as she grows.

At the age when story time becomes more practical, have the “book fairy” surreptitiously deliver surprises between the bookends. Eventually, your collection of Goodnight Moon, Green Eggs & Ham, Hippos Go Bezerk, and other of your child’s favorites will be associated with surprise, enchantment, and delight.  The memories you created between the bookends will be looked upon favorably in your child’s eyes forever.

Wall letters are a timeless classic in nursery and kid’s décor.  We like them because you are only limited by your own creativity – or what you can’t find on the Internet.  According to Oxford Dictionaries, there are at least one quarter of a million distinct words in the English language and we’re guessing that doesn’t include some legitimate kid-friendly wall words such as Bibbidi, Bobbidi, and Boo.

So, unleash your creativity and use wall letters to personalize your baby’s nursery with his/her name or monogram, to memorialize your favorite quote, to decorate with the alphabet, or to highlight inspirational words.

Family owned Alphabet Boutique specializes in creating custom, economically-priced, wooden hanging wall letters to help turn your creative wall word ideas into reality.  Their wall letters are ½” thick, giving you nice depth for the wall, and you can get them in heights ranging from 6 to 12 inches.

Alphabet Boutique offers you over thirty paint colors for your wooden wall letters and covers the gamut of popular baby shades like pink, blue, and green as well as modern orange, chocolate brown, and sage. In addition to color and size, you can specify font and hanging options.

Choose from cute ribbons for hanging in satin, organza, gingham, or grosgrain fabrics in almost as many ribbon colors as paint. For a less ornate look that might work better in many boys’ rooms, you can choose simple brass hooks for your wall letter hangings.

For the more daring, order unpainted wall letters.  It isn’t too hard to create decorative stripes that perfectly match the décor in your kid’s room.  All you need are your paint colors and a little painter’s tape.  Here’s how:

1) Start with a white primer.
2) Paint your wall letters in the color of your choice using an acrylic or latex based paint.
3) When they are completely dry (wait a couple days to be safe), use painter’s tape to create stripes across the wall letters taking care to wrap the painter’s tape around the entirety of the letter.
4) Paint around the painter’s tape and wait to dry.
5) Remove the painter’s tape.

Voila – beautiful, striped wall letters for your child’s room.

Cute as a Petunia Turquoise or Pink & Brown Baby Bedding

Petunia Picke Bottom Pink & Brown Crib Bedding

Petunia Picke Bottom Pink & Brown Crib Bedding

Petunia Pickle Bottom earned a place in our hearts with their fantabulous diaper bags. Yes, we know fantabulous is not a word.  But, fabulous was much too mundane.  As they put it, “the Petunia Pickle Bottom line has shown a fearless sense of style distinguishing itself from the once dreaded diaper bag”.  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

You may not know that Petunia Pickle Bottom has expanded their “bold lines, daring colors, and darling designer details” to baby bedding.  Now, you can get that same bold style and fabulous fabrics they use in their bags in baby bedding sets. Petunia Pickle Bottom’s exquisite use of silk brocades, hand-woven tweeds, chenilles, velvets, and embroidery will give you a one-of-a-kind, stylish look for your baby’s nursery.

We have two favorites within their crib bedding collection.  The first is the Sea Glass Roll aptly named for its stunning shade of turquoise blue accented with Ancient Asian-inspired saffron flower medallion patterns. The set comes with a bumper with box-pleated corners and brocade ties, box-pleated crib skirt, a double-sided velour/linen and Brocade linen blanket, fitted crib sheet, and throw pillow.  Because the color is so powerful, this bedding would look striking in a nursery with white or pale yellow painted walls with turquoise accents.  The beautiful aqua blue shades would pop against those light colored walls.  Consider putting the throw pillow on a light colored glider.  Or, find multi-colored wall art with a touch of turquoise in it to bring a bit more kick to the overall color palette.  Joo Joo Baby has some cute simple wall panels, or go more complex with a vividly colored wall hanging in the kid’s room theme of your choice.

Our other favorite is their Zinnia Roll named after the long-stemmed, brightly colored flower. The Zinnia crib bedding set comes with the same elements as the Sea Glass Roll, but is of a chocolate brown / dusty pink color with European-inspired starburst designs.  Delightful for a baby girl’s nursery, decorate the rest of the room in a contrast of colors.  As an idea, paint the walls a dusty pink and accent the room with other chocolate brown and pink decorative items.  Bring in a cream, pale beige, or pale pink for lighter contrast or a darker rose should you prefer darker contrast.  Be careful not to use too much brown on the walls when decorating around either set as it can make the room feel smaller and darker.
