If you follow our blog, you already know that one of the biggest recent trends in nursery décor is minimalism. Moms and dads are being more practical in their selection of paint colors, fabrics, and furniture so that their baby can grow in to, not out of, his or her room. In an effort to save time and money, many parents are moving away from babyish nurseries and designing simpler, sophisticated spaces that will withstand the test of time.

Another latest and greatest trend in nurseries everywhere is vintage décor. Nurseries that incorporate vintage elements are popping up everywhere, and there are websites dedicated to retro room design for babies and kids. Meaning, there is plenty of inspiration out there for parents who are searching for a whimsical, nostalgic feel in their home.

While these two styles (minimalist and vintage) may seem to be in stark contrast to one another, a Canadian mom found a way to effortlessly incorporate elements from each in her baby boy’s room. Mom tells us, “We modeled the nursery after a more modern aesthetic. We wanted a room for our baby boy that was both functional and stylish that would grow with him and that didn’t scream baby room! The first item that we chose for the nursery was the fabric for the custom curtains that we had made. We fell in love with the modern chic print and the colors.” We are in love with those curtains too, Mom! The muted colors are a perfect pairing with the print. For the wall color, these parents turned to the perennial favorite, Benjamin Moore, and selected Collingwood OC-28, a soft dove grey color that provides a subtle backdrop for the wall decor. But this couple didn’t stop there! They decided to create a stunning accent wall using masculine striped wallpaper designed Graham & Brown and ordered from Home Depot. This unique attribute adds so much visual interest to the room without overpowering the other features.

On to the furniture! Mom writes, “The crib and dresser/change table combo is from Cara Mia Furniture and the custom upholstered glider chair is from Monte.” The contrast between the rich color of the furniture and the soft grey walls is just stunning! The stately crib is softened up with Dwell transportation bedding and organic duvet cover.

And of course, no nursery or kid’s room is complete without unique wall accents and accessories. Enter weeDECOR! Mom found the perfect spot for our whimsical white tree wall decal. Mom tells us, “Other wall decor is made up of some vintage prints from our families and pictures taken during the pregnancy and shortly after our son’s birth. We can’t help but smile when we see this yellow baby nursery decorated with our birds in a tree and owl branch wall decals. Sweet and serene is what we see and this Michigan family sees that, too. These parents tell us, “We get so many compliments from everyone who sees the nursery. The weedecor designs are so unique, and they really transformed our nursery from a relatively plain room into a fun, whimsical space!” That makes us smile even more!

Mom and dad wanted baby’s gender to be a surprise. So, they chose a lovely shade of yellow paint – Moon Dance by Behr. To keep with the sweet and serene feel, they went with pine colored baby furniture by Westwood Designs – specifically, Cypress Point line in Honey Pine.

The parents knew they wanted wall decals and ordered our birds in a tree wall decal and owls on a branch.  Dad tells us, “I was so impressed by the quality of the decals. The material is durable and bounced back even when I accidentally pinched a corner here or there. The texture even seems to blend with the grain of the nursery walls: several people who walked into the nursery asked if we had painted on the designs! The tree was fun to assemble. It comes in several pieces to make it easy to apply, and you can’t see any seams once it is on the wall. When I saw all the leaves, I thought it might be difficult to get the pattern to come out ‘correctly’ (not being particularly artistic myself), but it is designed to make any arrangement come out nicely without much effort at all. My wife and I had a lot of fun seeing the design come to life.”

For the finishing touches, these parents chose the double border rectangular rug in Antique Linen, from JC Penney, Clouds & Stars sheets in cream, and Tiddliwinks Cozy Dot Blue Dust Ruffle. Finally they hung an oh-so-cute frog wall canvas they found while vacationing in Santa Fe, NM and placed a sweet owl statue on a shelf in a corner also found in an art gallery in Santa Fe.

Too early for spring might you say? Not for this Chicago mom! She purchased weeDECOR’s nature wall decal mural for her gender neutral baby room and tells us, “We really love the modern feel of weeDECOR wall decals!”

We asked mom how she went about designing her nursery so you could have the scoop. She says:

“weeDECOR’s nature wall decals were used in our unisex kid’s room. Given that we live in the city, we needed a creative way to make our room work both for our 3 year old son and our now 6 month old daughter.”

“We decided on a nature themed room and kept the walls a nice sky blue with paint by Benjamin Moore called Whispering Spring”.

Blue is a highly versatile paint color for a baby nursery. Based on our research, it is the most popular shade of wall paint for a baby’s room. Blue is a wonderful decorating color for a nursery as it can be kept gender neutral or made more masculine or feminine with other decorative accents like baby bedding, curtains, rugs, and storage. Blue paint also serves as the perfect setting for the sky in a nature themed room.

Mom told us that having the option of choosing the owl colors – blue, pink, or green – allowed her to keep elements of femininity in the nursery without being too girlish for their baby boy.

Mom chose crib bedding that also has a nature theme featuring robin egg blue, shades of green, and taupe – Dwell Studio’s Robin collection. She put the tree wall decal over the crib to coordinate with the baby’s bedding and accented with pink owl and bird wall decals.

She also put our standing bird wall decals near the changing table and though it is not shown in the photo, there is a bed on the other side of the wall that has lilac flowers on it to coordinate with her nature theme.

Baby William is a lucky little boy! He gets to sleep in this darling baby blue, nature themed nursery with a happy monkey hanging from his wall. How fun!

This NYC mom ordered some of our wall decals for the nursery and tells weeDECOR, “Attached please find photos of our nursery using your fabulous wall decals. We are thrilled by how it turned out!  We hope these are useful to other customers.” We think they look fabulous, too!

To decorate his nursery, Mom first painted his room with Benjamin Moore’s Little Boy Blue paint. She then adorned his walls with weeDECOR’s classic tree wall decal in brown with bird wall decals in yellow. She placed them above the crib which gives the illusion of baby William sleeping under a cozy tree.

For baby bedding, mom chose a set from Babies R Us featuring lions, monkeys, giraffes, palm trees to add color and even more happy creatures to the mix.

Over the changing table area, mom applied our premium personalized monkey wall decal spelling “William” with our modern wall decal letters.  We’re pretty certain that cute hanging monkey will keep baby William entertained for at least 30 seconds during a diaper change

Blue Painted Nursery with Elephant Themed Decor from Pottery Barn Kids

It is easy to see that baby boy Andrew is going to feel perfectly at home in his new room. And, we were so glad to be able to help create that cozy feel with our wall decals.  Want to know how mom and dad put Andrew’s nursery together? They were kind enough to share their decorating secrets.

They painted the walls with Benjamin Moore’s Soft Sky baby blue paint (#807). The soft blue, pale green and creamy white color palette serves as the cornerstone of their décor creating a cozy baby room in their Connecticut home.

They decorated the changing table area with our large, classic tree wall decal in mocha and our yellow bird wall decals. What a great way to keep Andrew distracted during changing time as well as to add a bit more whimsy to the room.

They furnished their nursery with a white crib called Bonavita Seaside Lifestyle Crib that conveniently converts into a toddler or full size bed. The crib and matching double dresser are from Simply Baby & Kids in Monroe, CT. They added a white rocking chair & matching ottoman which are swivel gliders and were also purchased at Simply Baby & Kids.

They added other furniture accents such as a small white table by the window and a bookcase which were purchased at The Christmas Tree Shop. The coordinating white floor lamp base next to the glider was purchased at Target.

The crib bedding, curtains, and rug are part of Pottery Barn Kids’ Eli Elephant collection and aren’t they just adorable? The elephant rug over the beautiful hardwood floor, in particular, really pulls the room together. Mom and Dad tell us that the elephant lamp with green polka dot shade and the larger green lamp shade were also purchased at Pottery Barn Kids.

And, for the finishing touches, mom and grandma partook in a craft project to personalize Andrew’s nursery. They purchased white, 9 inch hanging wall letters at Michael’s craft store, painted them with polka dots of green and blue paint, and hung them over the crib.

Our nature scene wall decal is shipped in a tube and comes on a large piece of paper like seen below. If you’re a planner, you can cut around the branches of the tree by creating separate pieces and taping them to your wall to see how the tree will look before adhering to your wall. Notice how each of the branches is numbered so you can see how they fit together?

We like to start with the trunk of the tree to give the mural a center point. It’s easy to peel and stick the trunk to the wall smoothing out any bubbles with your hands along the way. Since our wall decals are removable and reusable, you can move them if you change your mind on the location.

We then applied the remainder of the branches. It’s OK to have the branches overlap a bit where they meet the trunk of the tree. It is barely noticeable.

Once the branches were on the wall, we placed the leaves.

We then embellished with the owl wall decals and bird wall decals.

Step 4: Embellishing with Pink Owls & Birds

Voila!

Less than 15 Minutes Later...

Beautiful (if we say so ourselves) and fast! Note that our nature scene wall decal mural comes in blue, pink, or green for a gender colored nursery. If you want different colors, you can purchase our tree wall decal separately and add embellishments in other colors from our wall decal color palette such as navy, aqua, lavender, and lilac. Our tree wall decal has been selling like gangbusters speaking to a popular trend in nursery decorating – large tree wall decor.  In our opinion, there are many great reasons for this. First, nature is a versatile kid’s room decorating theme. There are so many ways to incorporate it into your design and still be unique, playful, and stylish – all the things we strive to be!  Additionally, using nature in kid’s room décor is a reminder to all of us to leave this world to our children better than we found it. Finally, trees are a powerful visual motif that can communicate both elegance and prominence. We like this whimsical tree wall mural painted by the father of RateMySpace user Injanis. She comes from a creative family which is obvious in the eye-catching uniqueness of her nursery décor. Her dad painted the whimsical tree wall mural and her mom made the decorative owl pillows. We love the handmade fabric birds attached to the painted tree to give the wall décor 3D perspective. The tree highlights the contemporary taupe, olive green, and brown Dwell baby bedding of animal themes and the clean lines of the modern crib. The large white tree mural helps pull this look together by providing a focal point for the room.

RateMySpace user, Rachel 2010, also went the hand painted tree route. She started with Valspar’s Lake Country light aqua paint and added a lighter, high gloss La Fonda Mirage (also by Valspar) to separate the existing antique white wall color on the ceiling. She painted the tree and made the pink birds from cut-outs of clip art and stuck them to the wall. Though you can’t see it in this photo, she also has a lovely floral mobile and personalized the room with painted letters on the wall.

If you are not as DIY inclined as these moms, don’t worry!  You can get gorgeous looks like these without the work of painting.
