The warmth of the summer sun has inspired us to pay homage to the color yellow. In our opinion, yellow’s beauty when painting a nursery comes from its versatility as a gender neutral shade that can stand alone or accent both cool or warm colors.

If you go warm, you can accent with pinks, oranges, and greens. If you choose a cool pale yellow, white, blues, and lavender accents are delightful options.

For your quintessential pale yellow paint, try Benjamin Moore’s pale yellow called “Moonlight”. See how beautiful this cool shade of yellow looks paired with other cool colors like this pale blue for Pottery Barn Kids? This yellow is the perfect shade for an accent and would also work as an accent for a lavender, pale green, or pale pink nursery.

For a warmer shade of yellow paint for your baby’s room, try Land of Nod’s Mythic line of paint. They have a lovely, warm shade of yellow called “Hay is for Horses”. It does a nice job evoking warmth with its buttery yellow accented with red, oranges, and hot pinks.

We also like Behr’s “Pale Daffodil” yellow paint shown here in this Rate My Space-er’s hot pink and yellow painted nursery. The bright pink adds warmth and the pale yellow paint tones down the pink. The ceiling and floor moldings painted in a decorator’s white add the classic detail we love.

For ideas on other shades of yellow, consider these:

Large tree wall decal and nature scene from weeDECOR

Our tree wall decal has been selling like gangbusters speaking to a popular trend in nursery decoratinglarge tree wall decor.  In our opinion, there are many great reasons for this. First, nature is a versatile kid’s room decorating theme. There are so many ways to incorporate it into your design and still be unique, playful, and stylish – all the things we strive to be!  Additionally, using nature in kid’s room décor is a reminder to all of us to leave this world to our children better than we found it. Finally, trees are a powerful visual motif that can communicate both elegance and prominence. When decorating your nursery, a large tree serves the practical purpose of giving you visual focus upon which you can design a beautiful nature themed baby room.

We like this whimsical tree wall mural painted by the father of RateMySpace user Injanis. She comes from a creative family which is obvious in the eye-catching uniqueness of her nursery décor. Her dad painted the whimsical tree wall mural and her mom made the decorative owl pillows. We love the handmade fabric birds attached to the painted tree to give the wall décor 3D perspective. The tree highlights the contemporary taupe, olive green, and brown Dwell baby bedding of animal themes and the clean lines of the modern crib. The large white tree mural helps pull this look together by providing a focal point for the room.

RateMySpace user, Rachel 2010, also went the hand painted tree route. She started with Valspar’s Lake Country light aqua paint and added a lighter, high gloss La Fonda Mirage (also by Valspar) to separate the existing antique white wall color on the ceiling. She painted the tree and made the pink birds from cut-outs of clip art and stuck them to the wall. Though you can’t see it in this photo, she also has a lovely floral mobile and personalized the room with painted letters on the wall.

If you are not as DIY inclined as these moms, don’t worry!  You can get gorgeous looks like these without the work of painting. Our removable and repositionable classic tree wall decal can be customized to your liking. For example, we started with a large tree in mocha and added modern-colored blue and orange owls and birds as accents for the full nature effect. Beautiful! You can get a dark chocolate brown tree wall decal, creamy white tree wall decal, or mocha tree wall decal as shown here.  And, our bird, owl, butterfly, ladybug, and flower wall decals come in a range of popular nursery colors. As always, your satisfaction is guaranteed.

If you are looking for unique owl themed wall décor for your baby nursery or kid’s room, you’ve come to the right place! Owls are a very popular element in kid’s room decorating these days so you have lots of options whether you want sweet and classic or modern and chic.

Of course we are partial to our owl wall decals which give you the flexibility to mix and match colors and styles without having to paint or nail holes in the wall. Choose from classic polka dot owls, boy, girl, or gender neutral owls in popular kids’ décor colors like pink, blue, lavender or our favorite  – these soft aqua owl wall decals.

For a bit more dimension in your owl wall décor that wall decals don’t have, we like this pink winking 3D owl on a branch wall décor piece called “Brooke”. From Bei Tesori Boutique, this wooden owl wall hanging can come with a wooden peg for a more functional piece. Bei Tesori’s designs are custom cut and painted in their workshop and this piece comes ready to hang.

This framed 3D owl “feltscape”from Etsy seller HibouCards is also a cute way to get a 3d owl look. The felt is sewn to create this spring scene with trees, flowers, tall grass with a 3 dimensional caramel, camel, and tan felt owl is sitting at the edge of the frame amongst the tall grass.

And, for cute owl décor on a wall shelf we love these adorable paper owls. These paper owls are designed by Mibo, a UK design outlet that also has fabulous lamp shades, throw pillows, and wallpaper. Their paper owls are available via a downloadable/print-at-home-able kit (once you pay, you are sent a pdf file with four owl paper templates and instructions) and are a cheap and cheerful way to get very cute owl decor.

A Few of the Most Inspiring Blue Nurseries We've Ever Seen

We are always impressed when we find a clever spin on a traditional theme or color in kid’s room decorating. So, we wanted to share these three inspiring blue nurseries from Rate My Space moms that are sure to knock your socks off, too. These super creative moms turned what could be traditional blue nurseries upside down, making them anything but traditional.

This glamorous, vintage “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” blue nursery was designed by “mnm” for her baby girl named Audrey, of course :) . She painted the walls in “Sea Breeze” by Valspar (matched by Sherwin Williams). And, she got her oh-so-glam look with a lot of smart shopping at Target and Amazon including her black and white baby bedding and sumptuous, white shag rug. Mnm painted the wall letters herself to give Audrey an elegant personality of her own. In her other photos, you’ll see very cool black and white damask printed curtains and a damask lamp, a vintage chandelier wall decal over her glider, and a to-die-for mirrored nightstand to hold knick-knacks.

For a more modern blue nursery, we love what “Chemegal” did in her baby boy’s room using a soft blue, bright orange, and brown color palette. Her blue paint is that gorgeous “Robin’s Egg” from Benjamin Moore. She had her custom white and orange giraffe crib bedding custom made by an Etsy seamstress as well as the large brown tree wall decal behind the crib. We love how well the orange is used to accent the room as it brings warmth and visual punch. The blue and brown do their job nicely bringing a calming and cooling feel. We also like the not-as-common vertical positioning of her wall letters.

Finally, if you’re up for creative wall painting, this classy looking, blue striped painted nursery is a show-stopper. Mom-to-Be “Altortolero” painted 2 inch wide white stripes with alternating 10.5 inch wide light blue (Behr Twilight Grey) and dark blue stripes (Behr Skyline Steel) to get this look. We love how the painted stripes and two-toned wall paint make the baby’s room feel like a beautifully wrapped present with a monogram wall decal “bow” on top. We also appreciate the rich, espresso colored furniture that adds an even classier feel and the modern touches like the brown and white Dwell throw.

It’s a Jungle in There! Animal Themed Modern Wallpaper for Kids’ Rooms

Wallpaper for kids’ rooms has made a comeback in recent years as new generations of designers have improved upon both its functionality and its look. Now, you can find beautiful kids wallpaper with cool, modern designs and it’s much easier to apply.

FermLiving is one of those designers and has a line of modern, kid-themed wallpaper called WallSmart. WallSmart is a non-woven wallpaper designed for easier hanging. You apply the paste directly to the wall rather than working with a pre-pasted material. It is even washable to protect from sticky hands. Remember that in any wallpaper project, two sets of hands are a must!

We found some great themes for modern kid’s room decorating such as this animal themed wallpaper in bright green with elephants, giraffes, chickens, birds, and squirrels perfect for a playroom. This tree themed wallpaper in yellow, white, and brown called Dotty would be cute wall décor for a girl’s room or gender neutral nursery. We can envision it working well in a yellow nursery with touches of hot pink in a girl’s room or apple green in a boy’s room. Finally, this car themed wallpaper is fun and comes in dark aqua blue and white featuring cars and trucks of contemporary design and colors. It would be delightful in a modern boy’s nursery or a playroom.

Keep in mind that the vibrant prints in these and other wallpaper designs can overwhelm a room. Make sure you use bold printed wallpaper sparingly. For example, each of these patterns would look lovely on an accent wall. If not obvious, an accent wall is when you choose one wall in the room to highlight. It may be the wall behind the crib or the wall behind a large dresser.

Bold wallpaper prints also look nice above or below a chair rail. We like the idea of using these prints below the chair molding and then painting the upper half in bright, coordinating colors.

If you like these wallpaper designs, you can get matching throw pillows to complete your look.

For versatile, gorgeous, and inexpensive children’s wall decor, nothing beats paper. With a little work, you can find practically any color or design you seek and have fun experimenting with do-it-yourself paper-based wall décor for your baby’s room.

Of course, it’s always nice to have a little inspiration or, even better, a little help from creative folks like those at Polka Dot Grove. Polka Dot Grove is a Canadian-based outfit specializing in whimsical and unique paper collages perfect for your baby nursery or kid’s room.

The idea for Polka Dot Grove was planted when founders Lisa and Sarah started looking for fun and affordable custom art for their children’s nurseries and came up empty handed and discouraged. After years of creating art for children of friends and family they decided to leave their teaching careers and make Polka Dot Grove a full time endeavor.

Their paper collages are an inspiration for all of us. This gorgeous modern elephant in dark and light grey is of paper with pretty and romantic details. We love the contemporary color scheme and could see this in a pale pink and charcoal grey baby girl’s room. The pretty pale blue and green giraffe is embellished with polka dots and enhanced with glass pieces for eyes – perfect for a baby boy nursery. And, this nature scene of a tree with whimsical branches is another example of their creativity and beautiful aesthetic.

Polka Dot Grove’s collage’s are created by hand from layers of acid-free paper. All of their designs come from original illustrations and use embellishments to add those delightful details like those seen on the branches of the tree and the eyes of the giraffe.

The collages can be displayed in any mat and frame you like. And, they will take custom orders so if you have an idea for a design or a pattern you are trying to match, they can create it. They can match any theme, color scheme, or bedding design. They can also do canvas paintings and wall murals if you prefer another format.

The paper collages can come in various sizes to meet your needs (up to 12×12) and price is based on the amount of detail required to create your collage.
