Let’s be honest.  To most of us, black and white nursery décor feels…uncomfortable.  For a lifetime, we have been trained by designers, retailers, and our own families that colors are the most appropriate way to decorate a nursery.  Explaining that black and white nursery décor is great for a gender neutral nursery or noting that babies can only see black and white their first few months anyway will not get you bonus points with your mother-in-law.  When you tell her of your decorating plans, she will likely still look at you funny.  

But, once you get over the odd looks and the initial uncertainty, black and white décor can be an exciting and fulfilling exploration of “color”.

One way to get over the hump is to think about black and white nursery décor as neutral color that can be brought to life with patterns, texture, and design.  For example, romantic toile and damask baby bedding patterns can bring softness to a baby room with a black and white color palette. A white shag rug can bring cozy texture to your nursery.  And, nursery-friendly designs like black and white turtle wall decals, floral wall art, or China doll toile baby bedding can bring character to the room.

Another way is to actually use black and white as a neutralizer for color.
