Modern Macramé Nurseries October 23 2014
Macramé is a form of textile making that's created by tying knots. It seems to be popping up everywhere, from retail windows and thrift shops to craft parties and baby nurseries. For us, it conjures up images of the 70s—long beams of sunlight bouncing off hemp planters—but the origin actually dates back to 13th century Arabic weavers known as 'migramah' meaning fringe. Macramé has a rich history, and makes a stunning decor statement, especially when paired with modern spaces.
You can add a bit of macramé to your baby nursery in so many ways. There are macramé bassinets, macramé curtains, macramé wall hangings, and macramé planters. Macramé also makes for a great DIY project with your kids. There are a number of tutorials online, but we found this macramé wall hanging from WhimseyBox Blog to be the most informative. The instructions contain photos and videos and they even sell macramé supplies in case you're unable to find them at your local hardware or craft store. Let the knot tying fun begin!
Nurseries: A Return to Nature October 22 2014
Unfinished wood furniture, simple wooden toys, and naturally-dyed fabrics are used to create some delightfully peaceful nurseries. To design a natural nursery for your child, we recommend beginning with furniture selection. Darker woods such as walnut create a dramatic contrast, while lighter woods such as birch blend in and let other elements shine. Whether you decide to go with new, vintage, handmade, or heirloom furniture, natural woods lend themselves to a timeless nursery.
After your furniture is chosen, the next step is choosing a wall color. Soft whites, ivories, grays—these are nursery wall colors that are not only versatile, but will grow with your child. If you decide to go with cooler walls, warm woods and textiles will help balance the palette. If you tend to favor bolder color, an accent wall is a dramatic touch. It's also good to keep in mind that your child's possessions and other toys will be colorful, so maintaing a neutral room will allow the space to evolve to fit your child's personality.
Now that the big items are covered, the rest of the room decor rests on the details. Big, cozy rugs, soft sheets, and curtains should be neutral, yet warm. To let the natural elements shine, neutral or soft-patterned textiles are also recommended. Brass and copper metals for light fixtures and furniture hardware are another way to add some warmth to a soft, neural room. Wicker baskets and wooden boxes work well for storing extra linens, books, and toys.
Another great way to feature natural decor is to bring the outdoors in. Make a garland out of foraged leaves, collect driftwood on the beach and turn it into a mobile or a clothing rack for your baby. Plants are also a welcoming touch, but be sure to choose safe plants and place them out of reach.
Last, but not least are the wall hangings—art prints, family photographs, wall decals—there are so many options. weeDECOR has a number of wall decals to help finish your natural nursery, including large trees, flowers, simple white polkadots, or your child's name. All of our wall decals are made of eco-friendly, baby-safe fabric rather than vinyl.

Lately baby mobiles have come back into vogue and there are so many unique takes that we wanted to share a few of our favorites that we think would look super cute with some of our most popular wall decals. However, be sure to keep the mobile well beyond baby's reach as you do not want her to pull it down upon herself.JennaEBe13 on Etsy, used varying shades of blue to help create the sensation of the sea. To complete your themed nursery look, check out our Under the Sea wall decals. We have dolphins, octopus, fish, seaweed and more in a variety of colors and styles. [caption id="attachment_4971" align="aligncenter" width="515" caption="Baby Mobile for a Safari Themed Nursery"][/caption] We would be remiss if we did not include a safari mobile for a classic jungle themed nursery, also from an Etsy designer. Designer CarrotFever aptly describes the mobile as inspired by simple Swedish design and her love for animals. A cute giraffe, monkey, zebra, lion, crocodile, and a tree with cute little falling leaves hang from cotton thread above your little one's crib. Even better, her mobile animals are made from eco felt and stuffed firmly with premium poly fiber filling. We have some sweet jungle wall decals to go with this theme, too. [caption id="attachment_4972" align="aligncenter" width="442" caption="Baby Mobile for an Alligator Themed Nursery"][/caption] A modern take on the jungle theme is to choose just one animal. And, believe it or not, the alligator can be an awfully cute animal to design a nursery around. We like the uniqueness of this alligator baby mobile created by blogger Mrs. Meyers Musings. The lime green and navy blue color combo helps spice up traditional green. weeDECOR also has an alligator wall decal in a modern design aesthetic. [caption id="attachment_4973" align="aligncenter" width="426" caption="Baby Mobile for a Hot Air Balloon Themed Nursery"][/caption] Finally, LovelySymphony on Etsy designs beautiful, whimsical hot air balloon baby mobile for a unique baby girl's nursery and go nicely with our hot air balloon wall decals.
We go Bah-Bah over Sheep Nursery Décor April 19 2013One of the sweetest classic themes in nursery décor is the quintessential little lamb. So classic. So perfect for your little one. We just couldn’t help taking notice of so many beautiful baby nurseries incorporating this theme! Aside from being simple and sweet, we appreciate the gender and color neutrality the sheep design element brings to a baby’s room. Since most sheep come in white, you can add almost any accent color of your liking. For example, see this lovely grey and white sheep themed nursery designed for Charlotte in Austin, TX. The rich, elegant furnishings from Restoration Hardware Baby and Child bring a classic touch to a relatively modern color scheme. For a bolder look, consider black and white sheep décor as highlighted by Joni Lay on BHG.com. Bold, black accents such as the lamp and dresser shown in this inspiration board can make quite an impact. And, babies are attracted to high contrast colors which make this nursery that much more attractive. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="480" caption="Baa Baa Black Sheep - Better Homes & Gardens"][/caption] For a softer, more classic look, see how entertaining and lifestyle expert Jenny Steffens Hobick used pale blue and classic lamb décor from Pottery Barn Kids to decorate her lamb themed baby room. We especially like the lamb rocker—just darling! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="483" caption="Emma's Nursery - Jenny Steffens Hobick"][/caption] And, weeDECOR has several sheep wall decal designs to help augment your nursery décor. Our jumping sheep wall decal has three little sheep jumping over fences onto blades of grass. We also have a personalized sheep decal to make your baby’s nursery feel even more unique. Decorating White Walls? Bright Ideas for your Kid's Room February 28 2013If you can’t paint your kid’s room walls because you live in an apartment or you just prefer white walls, do not fear. Your kid’s room decorating options are far from limited. White walls can be an inspiring starting point for designing a bright and bold baby room. A white wall gives you an empty canvas, which you can take in so many different design directions. We’re a fan of bright colors because they look so striking on a white background. For example, see how mom, Taza, decorated her nursery in her white-walled apartment with a collage of bold and bright colors. One of the statement pieces in the room is a yellow dresser that she and her husband painted. She adds a lime green vintage sofa as well as a colorful strand of garland above the non-working fireplace. Her children’s multi-colored toys add a ton of visual interest so that nothing else is really needed. Beautiful! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="432" caption="Love Taza - Eleanor & Samson's Nursery Tour"][/caption] Speaking of garland, Land of Nod has a fun multi-colored strand made of soft felt, which adds such a festive touch to your white walled room. You DIYers might even be able to make garland yourself! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="440" caption="Land of Nod - Rainbow Felt Ball Garland"][/caption] Australian blog, Little Sooti, is also a fan of white walls in a kids room with a bent of modern, Scandinavian design. Her collection of kids room finds include bold touches such as a red rocking horse, blue colored floors, a multi-colored rug, and more. Finally, check out Babble for this Scandinavian inspired kids homework/play area which, like mom Taza, uses the color from kids toys to help make the room pop. This work area has cute colorful play drums, a mini red piano, a yellow toy suitcase, and more to bring bold and bright to these white walls. [caption id="attachment_4934" align="aligncenter" width="456" caption="weeDECOR - colorful wall decals"][/caption] And we would be remiss without mentioning how our nursery wall decals can add color to your white walls without the mess of paint. Choose from popular kids room themes such as princesses, trains, owls, trees, and more!
New and Old Coalesce in this Fab Neutral Nursery January 12 2012[caption id="attachment_4751" align="alignnone" width="507" caption="This Canadian mom mixes vintage elements into a modern nursery."][/caption] [caption id="attachment_4752" align="alignnone" width="507" caption="Our whimsical tree wall decal in white is subtle and stately at the same time."][/caption] [caption id="attachment_4753" align="alignnone" width="507" caption="Eye-catching stripes create an accent wall."][/caption] If you follow our blog, you already know that one of the biggest recent trends in nursery décor is minimalism. Moms and dads are being more practical in their selection of paint colors, fabrics, and furniture so that their baby can grow in to, not out of, his or her room. In an effort to save time and money, many parents are moving away from babyish nurseries and designing simpler, sophisticated spaces that will withstand the test of time. Another latest and greatest trend in nurseries everywhere is vintage décor. Nurseries that incorporate vintage elements are popping up everywhere, and there are websites dedicated to retro room design for babies and kids. Meaning, there is plenty of inspiration out there for parents who are searching for a whimsical, nostalgic feel in their home. While these two styles (minimalist and vintage) may seem to be in stark contrast to one another, a Canadian mom found a way to effortlessly incorporate elements from each in her baby boy’s room. The result? A playful space that is that exudes sophistication and eludes the kitsch factor that can come into play when decorating with vintage pieces. Mom tells us, “We modeled the nursery after a more modern aesthetic. We wanted a room for our baby boy that was both functional and stylish that would grow with him and that didn't scream baby room! The first item that we chose for the nursery was the fabric for the custom curtains that we had made. We fell in love with the modern chic print and the colors.” We are in love with those curtains too, Mom! The muted colors are a perfect pairing with the print. For the wall color, these parents turned to the perennial favorite, Benjamin Moore, and selected Collingwood OC-28, a soft dove grey color that provides a subtle backdrop for the wall decor. But this couple didn’t stop there! They decided to create a stunning accent wall using masculine striped wallpaper designed Graham & Brown and ordered from Home Depot. This unique attribute adds so much visual interest to the room without overpowering the other features. On to the furniture! Mom writes, “The crib and dresser/change table combo is from Cara Mia Furniture and the custom upholstered glider chair is from Monte.” The contrast between the rich color of the furniture and the soft grey walls is just stunning! The stately crib is softened up with Dwell transportation bedding and organic duvet cover. And of course, no nursery or kid’s room is complete without unique wall accents and accessories. Enter weeDECOR! Mom found the perfect spot for our whimsical white tree wall decal. In keeping with a modern, minimalist feel, she chose white for a clean, crisp look. Mom tells us, “Other wall decor is made up of some vintage prints from our families and pictures taken during the pregnancy and shortly after our son's birth. All are mounted in frames created by Maclean Young Picture Framers. The lighting is a mixture of vintage finds and a custom ceiling fixture. The toy bins are from 3 Sprouts Organics and there is an assortment of vintage stuffed animals (original authentic Paddington Bear) and new finds!” This is a mom who knows how to mix different design elements and strike a balance between 2 competing décor trends. Vintage and minimalist pieces coalesce to create a stylish and unique room that will be enjoyed for years. Great job, Mom! You are an inspiration! Turtles and Owls and Whales, Oh My! October 25 2011We can't get enough of these adorable rooms! Moms and dads across the country are using weeDECOR wall stickers as part of their animal-themed nurseries and kids' rooms, and we have some great photos that show how to adorn your walls with animal friends. [caption id="attachment_4655" align="alignnone" width="507" caption="It's a turtle parade!"][/caption] Look at these turtles strut their stuff! A New York mom tells us, "I decided on turtle theme because I love turtles and found these colored turtle wall decals from weeDECOR that were perfect. The bedding from Pottery Barn Kids came with a turtle fitted sheet. The colors of the bedding matched the decals I purchased! Fabulous!" It IS fabulous! Wow! The Today's Baby Augusta Elite Convertible Crib in cherry finish has clean lines that add to the contemporary feel of the room. We love how the bold colors of the turtles pop against a sky blue backdrop. This mom decided to run the turtle parade in a continuous loop along all four walls of the nursery. Too, too cute! [caption id="attachment_4653" align="alignnone" width="480" caption="A nature wall decal mural is used to brighten up white walls."][/caption] [caption id="attachment_4654" align="alignnone" width="507" caption="We love how the owl and bird wall stickers seem right at home on this playroom wall."][/caption] Any renters out there? We know just how frustrating it can be when you want to liven up your dwelling but can't make any major changes. Hey, we can help with that! A mom in Kansas discovered how to use weeDECOR wall decals to embellish the walls of her daughter's playrooom. She explains, "We are renting, so I wanted to do something to "jazz up" our little girl's playroom without permanently changing the walls- enter weeDECOR! The fantastic staff helped me modify the colors since I wanted to add more color to the room and not necessarily stick to a particular palette; the paint is so pale that I wanted different colors." This is a mom who knows what she wants, and at weeDECOR, we pride ourselves in offering the perfect wall decor to match your personal style. When she told us of her color dilemma, we created some custom colors to add the visual punch she was aiming for in the playroom. The new colors turned out to be exactly what she wanted. Happy mom, happy weeDECOR. The nature wall decal mural offered the wow factor and versatility that she was looking for in playroom decor. The towering tree graces one wall, and other pieces were used to embellish those fabulous alphabet flash cards by Mark Fisher. Mom used a clever combination of string and clothespins to display the alphabet in a unique way that minimizes wall damage. With some savvy use of everyday household items and wall-friendly decals from weeDECOR, she is sure to get back that coveted security deposit! We love it all! [caption id="attachment_4656" align="alignnone" width="426" caption="This mom found the perfect embellishment to her crib bedding in our friendly whale wall stickers."][/caption] A Brooklyn mom found the most amazing accents to decorate her baby boys' nursery. She writes, "As soon as we found out we were having a boy we knew we wanted to embrace everything BLUE! It first started off with finding the perfect bedding...we've always been fans of Pottery Barn Kids so it was love at first sight when we saw the JACKSON themed bedding set!" We share her love of whales! There is something so charming about them when used in nursery decor. And what little one is fascinated by undersea creatures? Once mom and dad decided on the bedding and furniture, it was time to find some cute embellishments to complete her nursery. Mom explains, "The cute chubby whales were so lovable that we went all out! We paired the Jackson bedding with their (Pottery Barn's) whale mobile and whale wicker toy basket. The last and finishing touch was finding whale decals. Your store had exactly what we imagined. We got the large whale in matte navy and the small whales in light blue. It is truly the perfect finishing touch. Everyone that has seen our set up loves the whale themed look! Thanks for giving us "icing on the cake" for our crib set!" We couldn't be prouder to be a part of this room. The whale wall decals look fabulous above the crib, and the colors are an exact match! It sounds like these parents had a whale of a time creating an incredible nursery. Great job! Inspired to turn your little one's nursery into an animal kingdom? Check out our animal decals here. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
