Nurseries: A Return to Nature October 22 2014

Unfinished wood furniture, simple wooden toys, and naturally-dyed fabrics are used to create some delightfully peaceful nurseries. To design a natural nursery for your child, we recommend beginning with furniture selection. Darker woods such as walnut create a dramatic contrast, while lighter woods such as birch blend in and let other elements shine. Whether you decide to go with new, vintage,  handmade, or heirloom furniture, natural woods lend themselves to a timeless nursery.

After your furniture is chosen, the next step is choosing a wall color. Soft whites, ivories, grays—these are nursery wall colors that are not only versatile, but will grow with your child. If you decide to go with cooler walls, warm woods and textiles will help balance the palette. If you tend to favor bolder color, an accent wall is a dramatic touch. It's also good to keep in mind that your child's possessions and other toys will be colorful, so maintaing a neutral room will allow the space to evolve to fit your child's personality.

Now that the big items are covered, the rest of the room decor rests on the details. Big, cozy rugs, soft sheets, and curtains should be neutral, yet warm. To let the natural elements shine, neutral or soft-patterned textiles are also recommended. Brass and copper metals for light fixtures and furniture hardware are another way to add some warmth to a soft, neural room. Wicker baskets and wooden boxes work well for storing extra linens, books, and toys.

Another great way to feature natural decor is to bring the outdoors in. Make a garland out of foraged leaves, collect driftwood on the beach and turn it into a mobile or a clothing rack for your baby. Plants are also a welcoming touch, but be sure to choose safe plants and place them out of reach.

Last, but not least are the wall hangings—art prints, family photographs, wall decals—there are so many options. weeDECOR has a number of wall decals to help finish your natural nursery, including large trees, flowers, simple white polkadots, or your child's name. All of our wall decals are made of eco-friendly, baby-safe fabric rather than vinyl.

So Soft, So Modern Baby Bedding from Olio April 07 2010

We love brands that have a design point of view and Oilo’s point of view shines through in every one of their products. Oilo strives to turn your nursery into the most comfortable, clean, and carefree sanctuary in your home with fresh colors, stylish design, and imaginative motifs for your baby’s room. Oilo’s name comes from Hawaiian roots as Hawaiian word "lio" means small sprout and "ho’oilo" means the cool, rainy season. One of the things we most notice about Olio is that all of their designs have a softness to them – maybe inspired by the softness of Hawaiian rain. For example, this beautiful Raindrop, aqua baby bedding is embellished with delicate pellets of raindrops on its bumper. Soft aqua and white striped crib sheets bring visual interest into the mix. Even though it is of a bolder cobalt blue, the high contrast of the bright blue and white wheel motif crib bedding is softened with the roundness of the wheels that look so cute rolling along the crib mattress. And, this taupe and white modern baby bedding set is decorated with cobblestones with soft rounded edges. You can sense the smoothness of the cobblestones with your eyes. All of these sets have a feel that is modern, clean, and serene – great ways to describe your nursery decor. We also like that all of these three baby bedding sets have gorgeous matching pendant lamps. You can find the baby bedding sets and matching pendant lamps at 2 Sweet Sisters who is having a promotion (spend $250 and get a $25 gift certificate, spend $500 and get a $75 gift certificate, spend $1,000 and get a $150). We never get tired of looking at fun and playful wall decor for kids which is why we love looking at designs from Trendy Peas.

Founded by creative lead Patricia Cancado and business lead Raquel Kohler, these design-minded moms in Norfolk, VA who have known each other since childhood couldn’t find modern nursery wall décor to decorate their babies' rooms at a price they liked. So after much searching, they decided to do it themselves starting Trendy Peas in an effort to bring us unique, contemporary baby décor style at an affordable price. Trendy Peas offers their design collection as wall prints, wall canvases, and wall decals as well as paper goods like baby announcements and stationery designed to please both parents and little ones.

Above are some highlights from their collection. Part of their safari line, this chic and contemporary “G is for Giraffe” safari themed wall print comes with coordinating “E is for elephant” and “D is for deer” wall prints. Their cleverly named “Animal Talk” category has a “hooting” owl or “tweeting” bird on a branch. And, their shapes collection has bright and vibrant geometric wall prints featuring circles and dots, triangles, and squares with which to decorate a cheerful gender neutral nursery.

They also have a new product line of beautiful fabric wall decals. This gorgeous large tree wall decal of modern design and modern eco-friendly materials is an abstract display with over-sized leaves, pretty green patterns, a striking gray trunk and a cute blue bird.  They also have a bird on a branch fabric wall decal.

Note that all of their wall art can be purchased as a wall canvas or a print. They also have a collection of wall prints that can be personalized with your child’s name.

For the dual design and cost-conscious mom, Trendy Peas is offering free shipping on orders over $50.

How to Create an Urban Sanctuary for your Child March 09 2010

We found these designs inspiring and took away our own learnings on how to decorate an urban sanctuary for your child. Accent the Architecture One of the great things about living in a city is that you tend to have a lot of architectural elements with which to work. This four-story brownstone in Park Slope is a prime example. What’s clever is how the family used the dormant fireplace as a visual highlight in the room. The blue wall paint provides visual accent and the mantel serves as a decorative shelf for cute nick-knacks and wall letters. The blue wall paint makes the contrasting white paint used in the rest of the child’s room pop. And, we appreciate the use of orange to bring warmth to a cool blue and white color palette. Also, check out how creatively they designed the play space with buckets hanging from the wall to store art supplies. It makes you want to be a kid again.  Send in the Clowns The modern décor that looks so great in the rest of your home may be a bit too cold for a child’s room.  We like how this family in the Upper West Side of Manhattan used giraffe wall decals, a hanging ceiling wall mobile, and bright-colored wooden toys to bring playfulness and fun to their boy’s modern furnished room. The white furniture and bedding maintains a modern aesthetic that can bring consistency to the rest of a modern decorated home. But, the playful design elements make the space child-friendly. We like how the giraffe wall decals are a neutral theme that can be used in a boy’s or girl’s room. Also note the use of a hanging wall shelf to add space and keep the modern feel. Celebrate the Arts Living in a city gives you a great excuse to be fashion forward with the artistry in your kid’s room. We love how this NYC family went all out and painted a nature themed wall mural with paint, painter’s tape, and an exacto knife to create the curvatures in the painted hills. The mural makes quite a powerful statement. We also appreciate how cleverly they designed their own 3D wall décor with child-like hanging bird houses and bird wall decals. The room goes even further to celebrate art by embracing color and mixing modern and classic motifs with the furnishings. They sell your standard products like cribs and bedding (but, with a modern flair) as well as funky owl toy boxes, modern kids' armoires, and MOMA quality children’s wall art. We are inspired by their wide selection of bright modern designs and smart contemporary products.  We’ve chosen to feature Design Public’s bedding selection as it is such fun to browse the styles and colors.  They carry popular contemporary baby brands like DwellStudio, Area, Amenity, Olli and Lime, and Q Collection Junior. Take a peek at the DwellStudio bedding above – a stylish and fun modern take on polka dots and stripes.  A gorgeous chocolate brown and white color combo makes this bedding set pop against a white crib and mocha painted walls and would be perfect for the modern boy nursery.  Bring a bit more playfulness into the baby’s room by adding animal wall decals, wall hangings, pillows, and other animal-themed decorative elements. This organic bedding set from Q Collection Junior called "Sky" is of beautiful pale blue elephants and orange and cream ornamentation.  This set would also be great for a baby boy nursery given the fun elephant motif and blue and orange.  We love the packaging of this set.  No plastic! And, the Amenity nursery pattern called “Meadow” depicts cute bunnies running through a tranquil green grassy meadow. Great for a gender neutral or nature themed baby room, this organic percale cotton or fleece set comes in an orange, green, cream, and chocolate brown. All crib sets above are four pieces including crib sheet, bumper, crib skirt, and blanket.  And, Design Public offers many of the matching accessories (i.e. wall art, pillows, and throw blankets). Thanks, Design Public, for helping us keep our modern nursery decorating ahead of the times.

Jeeto is a Los Angeles based design company dedicated to creating contemporary-styled products that enrich environments through imagery and imagination. Inspired by pop art, vintage styles, and modernism, Jeeto’s iconography and imagery is indeed a contemporary art style all its own. The art canvases would not be out of place on the 4th Floor of the New York Museum of Modern Art (that is where works from famous modern artists like Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock are displayed) as they has that vintage, pop art, illustration style. Choose modern art styles with classic nursery or kid’s room themes such as monkey, giraffe, princess, fire truck, ladybug, or hippo wall canvases. Jeeto also has some less common kid's room themed images such as surfing, camp site, and panda canvases.  The colors used in the art are also on the modern side as they favor blues, oranges, and greys. Each piece of kid's wall art is triple silk screened onto museum quality canvas and stretched onto 2.5" pine frames for hanging.  You can get them in either small (18” x 24” inches) or large (30” x 40” inches). In addition to modern wall hangings for kids, Jeeto has a line of infant and toddler clothing and water bottles.  They also have a unique line of patches, stickers, and clothing dedicated to communicating allergy awareness.  Use cute graphics with phrases like “no peanuts, please” or “glutton free” to adorn the t-shirts, backpack, and lunch box of your allergy laden child. See here for a store locator of Jeeto’s products.

Blue, Orange, & Brown Modern Kid's Room Rugs from Giggle December 22 2009

[caption id="attachment_1499" align="aligncenter" width="424" caption="Modern Orange Rug with Birds, Butterflies, & Leaves for a Kid's Room"]Modern Orange Rug with Birds, Butterflies, & Leaves for a Kid's Room[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1500" align="aligncenter" width="424" caption="Blue & Brown Car, Truck and Bus Rug for a Kid's Room"]Blue & Brown Car, Truck and Bus Rug for a Kid's Room[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1501" align="aligncenter" width="424" caption="Modern Links Rug in Brown, Orange, Blue & Green for a Kid's Room"]Modern Lnks Rug in Brown, Orange, Blue & Green for a Kid's Room[/caption] We love Giggle for modern nursery and children's room decor.  Their selection is fresh and unique just like these kid's room rugs. These rugs are definitely not your boy baby blue and girl pale pink.  They are bright and bold to help you create a modern themed nursery or kid's room. Orange is one of the hot new colors in kid's room decor.  Make this orange rug a bit more "girl" with yellow and bright pink or a bit more "boy" with navy and brown.  This rug above features butterflies, leaves, birds, and flowers illustrated in white on a bold orange rug and would work well in a nursery with a modern nature theme. For something a bit less modern but still leaning contemporary, consider this transportation themed rug in blue and brown for decorating a boy's room.  Featuring a similar, contemporary illustration style as the orange seasons rug, this blue rug has cute cars, trucks, and airplanes outlined in brown. Finally, this "links" rug in brown, blue, green, and orange would look super cute in a playroom.  This rough-and-tumble design features modern geometric link shapes for a fun and stylish look. Making one of these rugs the centerpiece of the room is not a bad idea.  The are all visually stimulating enough to attract attention.  And, it shouldn't be difficult to find matching bedding, wall decor, and window treatment accessories as there are not too many colors in each rug to match. See our other articles for more ideas on modern decorating for kids' rooms.

The bedding set includes a polka dot fitted crib sheet, a crib bumper embroidered with cute turtles, matching quilt, and bed skirt. The accessories are adorable.  Check out this beautiful little turtle accent pillow and coordinating wall canvases.  The turtle wall art pieces are 12" x 12" and come in a three piece set. Should you prefer another theme, Baby Gap also has a pink and green snail set for a baby girl and a navy and light blue sailor set for a baby boy that are pretty darn cute as well. Such a unique way to use wallpaper in a modern nursery. Inke created Wallpaper Wildlife for her son's bedroom and was so satisfied with the result that she shared them with the public at an exposition event for new design. After lots of positive feedback she expanded the collection with wallpaper silhouettes by designing furniture and trees. These wallpaper silhouettes come in many vintage patterns and modern themes great for kids rooms.  The extra large tree wallpaper silhouette is rich with color and pattern.  The tree depicted here uses greens and blues where you can envision the blues as flowers or bluebirds.  The tall and elegant giraffe in the playroom is a gorgeous gold and bright green floral print with green stripes.  It is a lovely piece for a safari or jungle themed kid's room.  And, the unique ostrich stands proud and tall next to a changing table dressed in a paisley print.  Inke's silhouettes are made from real vintage and designer wallpaper and are handcrafted.  Each pattern is available in limited quantities and is sent out as a DIY kit complete with glue, a brush, and instructions. You can order the wallpaper silhouettes directly from Inke's website. See our other ideas for creative wall decor including beautiful wallpaper finds, wall decals, and wall hangings.

Luxurious, Modern Polka Dot Themed Nursery September 30 2009

[caption id="attachment_826" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Blue & Green Polka Dot Themed Nursery Decor"]Blue & Green Polka Dot Themed Nursery Decor[/caption] We love this luxurious, modern nursery decor by Bebe Chic.  Called the Bam Bam collection, it is Bebe Chic's modern take on the classic polka dot themed nursery.  They did this by creatively combining different sized-dots and a crisp scandia turquoise and truffle color palette - exquisite!  The surprise must-have-item in the set is the delicate suede circle pillow.  This lovely throw pillow would look perfect as an accent for a light-colored glider in a baby's room.  And, the use of the espresso-colored wooden wall letters adds a classic touch.  If you don't want to put holes in your walls, consider using personalized wall stickers. As for the nursery decorating set, you can purchase three or four pieces including a baby sheet, crib bumper, dust ruffle and baby blanket for under $400 from AllModernBaby.com.  A bit pricey, but quite unique. See our other special finds for themed nurseries.
